About Me
I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, mainly rock and pop, then as an acoustic singer-songwriter. Originally based in Cambridgeshire and then London, I was songwriter, singer and guitarist in Moreau's Island, a band that received Radio 1 play and national press exposure. Occasionally, whilst washing up, I get giddy when Steve Lamacq plays one of our old songs! More recently I've become interested in fingerstyle guitar and mandolin and I'm currently playing American folk music in a trio called The Backyard Buskers. I have been teaching in Sheffield now for 9 years and am also employed by the Sheffield Music Service to teach in schools, and so I am fully CRB checked.
The Lessons
My approach to the lessons is to get people up and running playing what they want to play as soon as possible. I can teach many different styles, from beginners classical, to acoustic fingerstyle, electric lead, blues, metal, country - you name it! My approach is song-based and I have a huge library of songs, solos etc, however it's totally up to you what you learn. If you want a more academic approach, you can take exams Grade 1-8 through me. I am proud to say that I have a 100% pass rate. Electric and bass guitar exams are provided by the Registry of Guitar Tutors and Rock School. The Registry of Guitar Tutors also now provide excellent Acoustic Guitar exams suitable for all ages. Classical exams are taken through Trinity College London. What I won't do is make you spend the lesson watching me play widdly widdly guitar solos while you sit there bored rigid.
